Questioning and Heidegger’s ποίησις: On Heidegger, on Lecturing

Only if we think ποιεῖν and ποίησις in a Greek way, i.e., on the basis of Ἀλήθεια, can we intimate something of the possibility according to what we call “poetizing” was thought by the Greeks as ποίησις or “poesy.”

                                           — Martin Heidegger

In the Greek language, the verb ποιεῖν and the noun ποίησις signify the activity which is called in English making or producing, whereas the verb πράττειν and the noun πράξις signify the activity that in English is called doing or acting. In Greek, ποιεῖν as an activity of making seems be more concerned with things than with people, whereas πράττειν doing or acting seems to be more concerned with people.
